Boarding Passes
A boarding pass or boarding card is a document that authorizes a passenger to
enter the airside portion of an airport and board a particular flight. This
document, provided by the airline during online or airport check-in, contains
the passenger's identification details, flight number, departure date and time,
as well as the assigned seat and class for the flight.
Additionally, a boarding pass may specify any privileges or benefits entitled to
the passenger, such as lounge access or priority boarding, which can be
presented for eligibility.
With the option of online check-in, passengers can now print or download their
boarding passes by themselves. To access secure areas of an airport, a boarding
pass must be presented.
To verify the validity of the boarding pass, most airlines and airports have
automatic readers installed at the boarding gate or jetway door. This also
updates the airline's database to indicate that the passenger has boarded, their
seat is taken, and their checked baggage is loaded.
