Why Visas Are Required
A visa is a conditional permission issued by a country to a foreign national,
which allows them to enter, leave, or stay within the country for a specific
purpose and duration. The purpose may be for tourism, business, education, or
other reasons, depending on the type of visa. Many countries require individuals
from other nationalities to obtain a visa prior to entering their country.
Once granted, a visa is typically stamped or affixed in the traveler's passport.
The visa application process can be complex and time-consuming, leading some
travelers to seek the assistance of third-party providers. Depending on the
country and visa type, an in-person visit to a visa processing center may also
be required.
Visas may be granted on arrival or through prior application at the country's
embassy or consulate, and in some cases, visas may be arranged for collection
upon arrival at the border.
Visa types and names vary by country, but commonly recognized categories include
transit visas, short-stay or visitor visas, long-stay visas, immigrant visas,
on-arrival visas, student visas, and working visas.
Travelers are advised to check with their
airline or the relevant embassy or consulate to determine if a visa is
required for transit prior to departing for their destination.
